Access to Art & Design - Final Major Project

I find that for my Final Major Project at College, I am the only student out of the Access course Art Class that is basing their work on Animation, so it could be difficult for me to collaborate or get any ideas from them.

I have chosen do to Animation as I would like to study this in more depth at University, and ultimately, get a career in something like storyboarding - which is why I am going to produce a storyboard as the main part of my Final Major Project and am looking forward to working on it.

The reason I like Animation so much is that you can really bring your art to life and give it extra meaning by telling it's story. This should help the person viewing it to gain a deeper understanding of the subject and also project a bit of myself through the story writing and character design.

So... I have started this project, and it wasn't easy at the beginning; with no title or topic being given I had a chat with one of my Tutors and decided to base it on my interest in myths and legends.  I have a couple of ideas relating to the horoscope and the changing seasons of the year.  Both will involve quire a bit of research and also a lot of work.  this is what I need to focus on:

*  Choosing a topic for my story
*  Create a suitable title (that fits the story)
*  Write the story
*  Design the characters
*  Draw the storyboards (a lot of work!)
*  Design some backgrounds that fit the story timeline
*  Draw a couple of 2D animation frames (if I have time)

Although this will be a lot of work, I feel sure that I will enjoy doing it!

It's a little later on and I have decided that the story I will tell will focus on a mythical creature in an enchanted forest / woodland and their appearance will reflect the changes in the natural environment.  It will tell the story of a young being and how they grow through the year.

I've had a chat with my Tutor, and although I had decided to feature woodland fairies for this project, he wanted me to choose a more challenging subject for my characters.  As such, I have decided to feature a centaur as the main character - I have never studied horse anatomy before and this will prove to be both interesting and further develop my previous animal / human metamorphosis studies.

Bearing this in mind, I will have to watch Disney's film, 'Fantasia' which features Centaurs in a pastoral setting (to Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony).  This is one of my favourite films - I love the way the centaurs are portrayed and the artists' use of beautiful colours to create visually dramatic backgrounds and characters.  I hope also to watch 'The Chronicles of Narnia' for further ideas on background design and how animals with human characteristics behave.  I will also have to practice drawing horses and study their anatomy and movement.  This can probably be best seen by using the internet and YouTube as well as looking through some of my animal anatomy drawing books / nature reference books.

OK, so here is my story.....

The Scene is in an enchanted woodland, and the main character is a female centaur.  The story startin in the Spring and the centaur is a young foal.  She is made out of bark, leaves and flowers to mirror the changes in the world around her as the trees change with the seasons.  As the year progresses, she grows into a teenager and then as Autumn arrives, an adult, where she produces seeds and loses her leaves, before turning grey and white and being completely bald in the Winter.  As Winter starts to lead into Spring again, one of her seeds starts to sprout and out pops a tiny baby foal centaur - the cycle begins again.  I think it will look great visually and tell a nice story too.

I have my story now, so time to design my character.  Like most creatures, when very young, their anatomy and coat / skin are much different to when they are fully grown.  Foals have very long legs and fluffy tails for example, unlike an adult horse which generally has flowing tail and mane and the legs are more in proportion to their body.  I have practiced drawing both foals and horses so that I get the look right.  My drawings will form part of my final exhibition.  I am quite pleased with the five designs I have come up with and will choose which I like best before I start working my the storyboards.

I have designed several backgrounds for each season of the year.  I decided to go with the woodland clearing as it would show off the character at the foreground much better (a lot of trees in the background would have looked a but busy and confused).

Character design now chosen, and it's time to start those storyboards.  This is going to be a lot of work.

I found the storyboards to take a bit longer than I thought they would.  Although I enjoyed doing them, they involved a lot of work.  However, I took time and made sure that I didn't have to re-do anything, rather than rush them and have to re-do whole boards.  I have done them roughly (as professionals do) and coloured them with pencils.  I am quite pleased with the end result - my Tutor seems quite happy with them too.  The other students in my group didn't really have much time to look at them and give me feedback, but if my Tutor is happy, then so am I!!!!

I wish I had time to draw a couple of 2D animation frames, but I really don't have time left as I have to complete an evaluation and organise my exhibition of work.  What a shame... however, I shall be going to study Animation soon at Nottingham Trent University and will learn how to do it properly by a 2D animation specialist - how good is that?????

Can't wait! Bring it on!!!!!

Study Skills

Study Skills

Study skills enables you to learn more better, be more prepared for any future coursework or project to complete, gives you a closer perspective on your work and helps you study more into your coursework.
Study skills can be beneficial to future life skills for any employment or and further education like another year of college or University, preparing you for anything in those areas for study skills, however, you need to understand the ideas and concepts of study skills for in order in a particular subject for those skills to come into effect.
Study skills can increase you confidence in your course as your awareness to guide yourself in your own direction through the course as this is encourages yourself to work more independently in your work, without asking much assistance from tutors.
Even more, study skills aren't just for college or secondary school, again, they can be extremely useful for "organisational skills, time management, prioritising, learning how to analyse, problem solving, and the self-discipline" as this will assist you with mostly after college life and into employment stages.

Metamorphosis Unit: Kaa Humanoid Costume

Reminder: The Deadline for the Costume is March 12th! Please do not forget!!!

For my Metamorphosis Unit, I'm going to use some techniques that I've learned and have been using in my previous year such as Latex, Mod rock, Wiring, Paper Mache, etc.

The subject that I'm basing my unit on is Humanoid Animals, why I've chose this subject for my unit, is that it's not just going to be used in college, but at the play too! The play in question which I'll be wearing in the play for is The Jungle Book, which have made me play the upcoming role of Kaa the Snake, a minor antagonist in the story!

His characteristics is very sly and cunning, as he tries and fails humorously to capture and eat the "Man-Cub" for himself, but his attitude is very elegant, but he disguises his sneaky ways into a friendly and calming mood for his 'prey'.

The way he walks is slow, but precise as he moves in the trees or on the ground, however it becomes short-lived as his approach to other creatures, especially Mowgli, as Kaa's head moves very rapid and and he mostly invades some characters personal space like moving his head with straight eye contact to a character and would hypnotise in eye contact (reenacting with smooth head movement and body movement).

However, the main objective to maintain is his appearance in the play, his costume. So I did some research about the film and it's setting, in the beginning of The Jungle Book, Bagheera reveals that the story is set out in the deep jungles of India, however the time of the film is unknown. So I decided to make a costume for my character of Kaa, by looking into different outfits that are linked or wore around the Indian culture:

I will be making a puppet tail to act out as a third limb in the play (controlled as a Rod Puppet limb), which will either be attached to the skirt, one part of the sari which could be one end of the sari, or on the end of a scarf.

Dada String Experiment Experience

15/09/16 -

In our practical session, we were studying about the use of positive space and negative space.
Positive space is the space used in enclosed space, but negative space is the space around the object, to explore this experience, we used string to create positive and negative space

Evaluation:

Pic 1 - "String Angel"
I've taken the inspiration from my thought and personal experience from our classes' experiment with string, by placing string to objects, walls, floor, (And maybe the ceiling? I'm not certainly sure...). But the experience in my personal opinion, was that there was not much space around the room to move around in or lack of negative space and it makes it pretty difficult to move around and feels pretty "enclosed" or "trapped" in a limited space.
Most of the strings are linked from the shoulders, wrists, waist, thighs, knees, and ankles, this body parts are most of the functioning parts of the body, like the ball, (Wrists, Ankles, Shoulders, etc...) the hinge, (Elbows, finger joints, knees, etc..), this is linked to my experience with the movement around the room, not being able to move freely without chasing any of the strings (and maybr trippping over in the proccess!)
Most of the string was either a little loose to draping downwards, making the experience a tad hard to walk through with the string being too low down or the string being too tight or high to get past. I've first recorded my experience by phone in my own POV (Point Of View), showing the difficulty of my route taken by me through the string lines, sometimes getting either struck or not knowing if there's a string line nearby, usually being too close to me.
Then I've created a few sketches of the experience, one of them, "String Angel" is the one that I've explained about the strings around parts of the body. The string is wraped and attatched to the mentioned parts of the body, then the strings looks like they are attatched to a wall (or the ceiling?), lifting the the other end of the string higher to resemble an Angel-like look with the string.

Pic 2- Cat's Craddled One of the techniques I've tried out in the string experiment was a technique called the "Cat's Craddle" and I've wanted to try it out by making different forms and shapes with this technique. Again, strings are also on the body too, since the experience of me trying to escape the cluster of strings around where I was working at also made my route of safety a little challenaging and a bit wobbly, seeing that the figure is a unbalencing position, which makes the figure in the picture look wobbly on it's feet, expressing that the figure is in a difficult and tight position, just like when I was with I was in the string experiment.

Insulation (Where shall I stage my MashUp?)

I've looked around the Oscroft area to try and locate where I can show my video on and where it shall be staged at.
At the moment, I've found some windows halfway through the hallway that's connected from the entrance of the Oscroft centre, to the 3D room and the Textiles room, and then to the 2D room, which both walls have windows which belong to the 3D and Textiles are facing each other. My idea with them is that I can put the projector on one side of the window and block the other window from the other side of the window, to make sure the video does not go through the window, and maybe block the other window, but cut a rectangular opening for the video to project on the other window for two reasons, to block the sight of the projector's location and try to block out any unwanted light from behind and around the projector, that way, the video is more clear for the viewers to see the video clearly without any light by in the way of the projection, however there could be a problem, passer-by's will walk pass the video, this will block the projection or cast shadows on the screen.

In the Textiles room, there are some cupboards inside the room, beside the outside windows, I had two ideas with cupboards, one was to let the cupboard doors closed and projected the video on the cupboard doors, but the problem is that, the colour of the cupboards are striped in black and white, and my video is in colour, this will mess up the colour of the video and the image, plus it'll be irritating to see the video on. Or, I can ask if I can move all the equipment from the inside of the cupboard and place a screen in the middle of the cupboard and maybe place some extra stuff around the video, and maybe I could let the viewers to open the cupboard to see the video on the inside, However, the video will also share the same problem, since the video is being projected around the room, passer-by's will walk pass the projection, blocking the video and casts shadows on the projection.

DeviantART Link~!

I have been using Deviant ART for over two years and I've wanted to expand my art blogger to Deviant ART!: http://pixeldragon100.deviantart.com/ Experience wise, DeviantART is a place where I can share my art and talent to the world and getting feedback at the same time, the feedback that I get is very useful and resourseful if my art need improvement in the future. Plus, I get people requesting things for me, this puts me in a real-life situation where I get commissions from other people and following other people's request, like a few request that I did in the past:

Unit 50: Information Graphics 'Creating Brand ID'

Important stuff to be reminder:

  • Create a quirky new product
  • Encouraged to make changes to existing by exploiting your own ideas and imaginative ideas
--------------------------------
  1. Company nameCorporate brand ID (Umbrella company) [Umbrella Company: is a base / main company that creates more than one product in the franchise. For example, Kellogg’s made Cornflakes, Frosties, Rice Krispies, etc…]                           --- & ---
  2. Product name: Logo and brand idea for a range of no less than 3 different products (produced by the umbrella company) [Logo: is a icon or sign that symbolises or represent the certain company.]
  • Blank-Light Enhancement
  • God-Mother Jeanette's Cauldron
  • Call Of The Wild
  • Mother Nature's Remedies
  • Dr Default's Cavern
  • Dragon's Cove
  • Autumn Harvest
  • Spring Cleansing Gardens
  • Summer Falls
The meaning of the Company's name, 'Autumn Harvest' is that the ingredients of the products which including the traditional and natural techniques of the creation of the products, the name also represents the company's main time of the year to harvest different scents and medicinal fluids or leaves from the different species of plant-life in the season of Autumn, hence the titles of the products is always the main scent, herb or fluid from the plant

The type of Typography I am looking for is a woodland type of font from grass to plant like font, I can also experiment with other fonts to make readable and but not too complicated. I've looked into a Bonsai Tree in an Autumn Season phase, along with the font's leaves falling off from the font's text surface. This can be appealing to my target audience, but I have applied one too many leaves on the font, which may cause the font some difficulty of reading the font.

I’ve also looked for ground / earth style of Typography, so I’ve looked into shaped or marked soil fonts with pieces of soil scattered and gathered together to make letters.

I've found out that making the soil typography was very difficult for me to create, because it mostly spreads if the soil is too close up together, so I tried to go basic, but still appealing for the target audience, so I've started to look into different type of plant-like font styles to try out, and I've found a few, but most of them were too hard to read from and some too plain to use, but I've used one font and work around it, producing this:

--------------------------------------

I'm looking for a natural-looking form or appearance, so I've looking into different things associated with the season of Autumn, such as plant life, leaves and wildlife that appear or are highly seen by that time of the year, but I've mostly looked into Autumn wildlife, like foxes, squirrels, birds, and hedgehogs, but I've decided that the logo shall be a hedgehog, since the head of a hedgehog reminds my of a Autumn Maple leaf's shape & form.

I've also experimented with the logo's colour palette by changing the colours of the outline on the logo, using colours that are inspired by the season of Autumn like golds, browns, yellows, lime greens, oranges, etc. I've tried to use two colours on the logo's outline and one colour for the hedgehog's eye, but I found out that the logo looked too overwhelming for the eyes, so I've tried to apply only one colour to the logo, but keep the hedgehog's eye at the same colour, so all of the outline is the same base colour except the eye.

I am working on a series of lotions along with natural references of common autumn plant-life and scents and their effects on the user of the lotions, I looked into different types of scents found in the autumn season and found these scents:

·      Sunflower Incense
·      Maple Leaf Incense
·      Daisy Incense
·      Rosemary Incense
·      Mojito Incense
·      Moist Grass Incense
·      Rain Mist Incense

Sunflower Incense Lotion (packaged in Vials & Spray Bottles) - Eye Strain Relief & Sight Enhancement: The sunflower smelling, eye relief lotion is to be applied around closed eyelids to helps the user to keep awake and decrease blurred vision from rough sleep or overworking on bright software or close-up lighting and is also to enhance eye sight from far distance if used around the eye area (with closed eyes to avoid eye irritation, it can also come in spray bottles.

Maple Leaf Incense Oil (packaged in Vials only) - Hand lotion for dried up or ripped skin: The Maple Leaf smelling, hand lotion is to be placed on both hands and rubbed in across the surface of the user’s skin, to relief skin irritation, protests any open rips on the skin surface, and prevents any future incidents of rips of the skin from dried-up skin being pulled.

Daisy Incense (packaged in Vials & Spray Bottles) - Nasal lotion for blocked up airways and internal throat irritation relief: The Daisy smelling, nasal lotion is a medicinal lotion, which can applied either around the user’s nose or around the user’s neck to help relief blocked noses, sore throats and painful coughing (ask a doctor if safe to apply), the Daisy Incense can come in spray bottles.

Rosemary Incense (packaged in Tubs only) - Face & Body cream: The Rosemary smelling, spot eliminating and facial care cream, which is applied along with water and must be applied on moist skin for best results, this eliminates any traces of spots and blackheads from the surface of the user’s  face and skin, it also lifts the natural colour of user’s facial area, this product comes with a finishing moisturiser that gives the user's skin a extra fresh looking glow the user's skin.

Mojito Incense (packaged in Tubs only) - After-Bathe Body Butter: The Mojito smelling, body butter, can be either applied on dry skin on the go, or on moist skin, freshly rinsed from a bath or a shower, this keeps the body moisturised.

Moist Grass Incense (packaged in Gel Bottles only) - Ear Irritation or Ear Infection relief : The Moist Grass smelling, ear-ache relief gel, can be applied either by rubbing around the shell of the ear or just outside the opening of the ear for better results, this gives the gel applied ear a loosening effect inside the passages of the ear or ears and dismisses any trace of irritation or tension on the surface of the skin or the inside the passage of the user’s ear or ears, (same as the Daisy Incense, ask a doctor if safe to apply).

Rain Mist Spray (packaged in Vials & Spray Bottles) - Stress relief & Calm collector: The Rain Mist smelling AND feeling, mood-reviving spray, can be used at anytime or anywhere, this vial sized bottle is great for carrying around and last for a long time in use wise. The effect of this product is very special; the particles in the spray loosen the tensed muscle inside the user’s face or on the user’s forehead, causing the levels of stress to drop and leads the user to a peace sensation, along with the moist scent of fresh rain.

----------------------------

3. Packaging: This is including a mock-up of the product
&
4. Surface Graphics: Box, labels, surface graphics

The product size are going to be either the minimum size of a tub to the maximum height of a spray bottle, but the packaging was going to be a, since I had a lot of ideas of the boxes and packaging to be.
Tub:I've looked into shapes and forms for the body butter tub design, I had a few ideas like a plant pot, with the scent dropper as a sapling / sprout, a plant box, same as the plant pot design, the tub will have a sapling / sprout , even a bulb, but I chose the plant pot design, the tub had to keep a lot of body butter and the quantity of the contents.
Vial:I've also looked into vial packaging, so I've looked more around objects that are usually use outside or seen outside that is naturally form or custom by natural resources, then I found either the form of a bird house, the form of a lantern and a string handle to carrying with,(same way as the customer would carry the bird house) or the form of a traditional paper lantern, I've gone with the lantern as the shape is basic and is easy to carry with the string being the handle of the packaging. The vial itself will be around the form of a bug catcher (a jar which young children used to use to keep bugs in), it will have a tiny handle with a cork, but when the cork is pulled out, on the bottom of the cork is a dropper, which you can use for apply the contents without using any other object to place it on.
Gel Bottle:The Gel design along with the box packaging, was very difficult to find some forms for a gel bottle, so I've looked into gel bottle natural skin design, which contained some very useful designs like a plant root, growing around the product's container, or a pile of leaves in different colours, stacked on top of each other, or even leaf veins surrounding the product's surface.
Selection box: I'm also throwing in a selection box or boxes which will either a crate looking box package, a greenhouse-looking box, along with green plastic windows, or a cross-hatching basket, which will include the handle, but I'm having second thoughts about the greenhouse box packaging, since the packaging will be covered by plastic windows or the contents the packaging could either melt if it's left in a hot area or left in the sun for too long, but the cross-hatching basket design could be better, but I should be careful for what I could use on the selection box, to avoid any internal damage to any of the products inside the selection, and all of the products of Autumn Harvest are against animal testing, works along side with fair-trade, it's eco friendly, and most of the products are recyclable.

-------------------------------

5. Information graphics: Instructions that provides the consumer with guidance for product usage and inform about the benefits, (this is the integral part of the packaging)
